Book Review by Geoff Carter, Host of the UK Talk Radio Breakfast Show
📚 Shattering the Plastics Illusion by Dr. Chris DeArmitt

Right, let me start by saying this book genuinely challenged what I thought I knew about plastics—and I talk for a living, so that’s saying something.

I’ve just finished Shattering the Plastics Illusion, the follow-up to The Plastics Paradox, and if the first book rattled a few cages, this one kicks the whole door down. Dr. Chris DeArmitt has clearly done his homework—over 5,000 peer-reviewed studies read and dissected, and not a penny of funding or influence in sight. That alone earns my respect. But it’s the way he explains the science—clearly, calmly, and without the usual doom and gloom—that really struck me.

As someone who speaks to the public every morning on UK Talk Radio, I hear people’s concerns all the time—about climate change, pollution, recycling. We’ve all seen the headlines about plastic islands in the sea and heard the cries to “ban plastic!” But after reading this book, I’ve realised how much of that is based on misinformation—or, to be blunt, scare tactics.

DeArmitt covers it all: what really happens with plastic waste, whether recycling actually works, what the deal is with microplastics (he’s reviewed over 500 studies on that alone), and perhaps most eye-opening of all—he shows that many so-called eco alternatives may actually do more harm than good when you look at the full life cycle. The science is there in black and white. He’s not telling us to love plastic; he’s telling us to understand it properly before we try to replace it with something worse.

The section on the “floating island of plastic” myth really stayed with me. We’ve all seen those dramatic images, but it turns out they don’t quite tell the whole story. DeArmitt calmly dismantles that myth and many others with the kind of precision you expect from someone who’s made this their life’s work.

Now, I’m not a scientist. I’m a breakfast show presenter who loves a strong coffee and a good laugh before 9am. But this book made the science accessible—even for someone like me. It’s a book for everyone: the curious, the skeptical, the policy-makers, the parents, the students. And I’ll say this—if you’d rather be informed than just frightened, this is the book to read.

So here’s my Geoff Carter verdict: Shattering the Plastics Illusion doesn’t tell you what to think. It gives you the facts so you can make up your own mind. And in a world of media hype and social media rage, that’s not just refreshing—it’s essential.

Five stars from me.

Geoff Carter Reviews The Plastics Paradox on UK Talk Radio

Hi, Geoff Carter here from the flagship Breakfast Show on UK Talk Radio, and today I want to shine a light on a book that really challenged what I thought I knew about the environment — The Plastics Paradox by Dr Chris DeArmitt

Now look, we’ve all seen the headlines and those shocking nature documentaries — plastic is public enemy number one, right? Well, not so fast. As someone who’s passionate about science, nature, and the environment, I was blown away by what this book reveals.

Dr Chris DeArmitt doesn’t deal in opinions or guesswork. He backs up every claim with solid scientific research — over 400 studies, in fact. He unpacks the environmental impact of plastics using hard data, not emotional headlines. And what he proves is jaw-dropping: in many cases, plastics are the most environmentally friendly option when you look at the full lifecycle analysis.

Here’s the kicker — replacing a pound of plastic often takes three to four pounds of other materials, which leads to more waste, not less. And that plastic bag we’re told will linger for 1,000 years? It starts breaking down in just one year when exposed to the elements.

I won’t lie — this book made me uncomfortable at first, because it forced me to rethink what I thought I knew. But that’s what good environmental science should do. If we’re serious about sustainability and saving the planet, we need facts, not fear.

The Plastics Paradox is a short read, but it’s powerful. If you work in materials, packaging, or care about the science behind environmental issues, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s a must-read for anyone who wants to make smarter, greener choices based on truth — not myth.

So next time you’re sipping your morning brew and thinking about the planet, maybe swap guilt for knowledge and give this one a go. Big thumbs up from me — Geoff Carter, over and out!

Dr. Chris DeArmitt’s

The Plastics Paradox

Hi, Geoff Carter here from the UK Talk Radio Breakfast Show.

I recently came across a website that completely changed my perspective on plastics and their environmental impact: plasticsparadox.com.

Dr. Chris DeArmitt, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a leading plastic materials scientist, has dedicated over 3,000 hours to reviewing thousands of peer-reviewed scientific articles. His goal? To uncover the truth about plastics and the environment.

What struck me is that much of what we believe about plastics—like them taking 1,000 years to degrade or being the main culprit in ocean pollution—is based on misinformation. Dr. DeArmitt’s research reveals that plastics often have a lower environmental impact than alternatives like glass, metal, or paper when considering the full lifecycle analysis.

His website offers a wealth of information, from detailed analyses on microplastics and recycling to evidence-based policy suggestions. It’s a treasure trove for anyone interested in making informed decisions about environmental issues.

For those who prefer a deeper dive, Dr. DeArmitt’s book, The Plastics Paradox, is available for free download on the site. It’s an eye-opening read that challenges conventional wisdom and encourages critical thinking.

In a world flooded with sensational headlines, it’s refreshing to find a resource grounded in rigorous scientific research. If you’re serious about understanding the environmental impact of plastics, I highly recommend visiting plasticsparadox.com.

Stay informed and make choices based on facts, not fear.
