Geoff Carter Reviews:
Bright Star-Mr Handel Loses His Little Dots
By Marie Gotoh
I found Bright Star, Mr Handel Loses His Little Dots to be one of the most fascinating and emotionally rich historical fiction books about composers I’ve ever read. This isn’t just a dry biography of Handel—it’s a vibrant, character-driven story full of ambition, love, cultural tension, and artistic triumph.
What drew me in immediately was the vivid portrayal of 18th-century Europe. As someone who loves music and historical detail, I was completely absorbed by Handel’s journey—from his early defiance of his father in Halle, Germany, to his passionate discovery of opera in Italy, and finally his bold move to London.
This novel truly shines as a biographical historical novel. It brings the young Handel to life—not just as a musical genius but as a man torn between duty and desire, comfort and risk. The writing is immersive, the settings are atmospheric, and the story is steeped in real-world events like the War of the Spanish Succession, which adds tension and urgency to his personal decisions.
One of the most engaging aspects of the book is how it weaves romantic complications into Handel’s story. There’s a double love triangle that adds emotional weight and human complexity, but it never overshadows the main narrative. Instead, it enhances our understanding of who Handel was and how relationships shaped his music and his choices.
As someone who enjoys historical novels about musicians, I appreciated how the author balanced musical insight with storytelling. You don’t need to be a music scholar to enjoy this book—if you love historical drama, you’ll find plenty to enjoy.

🎼 About the Author: Bright Star
I was born in Japan, and lived in Japan, Brazil and France. Now I’ve been living in the UK, London, for more than twenty years. I hold a PhD in History of Art from La Sorbonne (Paris IV). Though trained an art historian, I’ve always kept my interest and passion for music. I am an amateur pianist, and sang in different choirs occasionally. I was not really familiar with Handel’s music though I always knew him as one of the Baroque giants. Then I realised that the German-born composer was very much part of Britain’s tradition when I moved to London. That’s how I started to be interested in Handel, his music and his life.
More I searched, more I realised that his life was really exceptional. How many composers survived like him—being the star composer when he was alive and continuing to be so through time? He is an indispensable part of British culture. So I started to write and I’ve been writing for more than ten years.
