Author Nick O’Brien
At UK Talk Radio, we spoke to author Nick O’Brien about how he began
writing, how his stories develop and the books he has created.
First, we asked him when he began writing.
When did you first begin writing?
“I started writing nearly 20 years ago now, just tinkering with
a whole raft of ideas before Respect for the Dead began to crystallise.
“I find the most enjoyable part of writing is developing the
characters and the plot. The plot evolves gradually throughout
the entire process.
“I don’t have a regular writing routine; there can be long periods
of ‘drought’ while I search for inspiration, and when that comes,
the next section of the plot develops.”

We also asked Nick to tell us about his book, Respect for the Dead.
The book centres on Roger Carter, an ordinary, middle-aged man
living a dull existence, henpecked by his wife Martha. When the
insurance company he works for is taken over by a large Dutch firm,
Roger is sent to Amsterdam for training.
There he meets the beautiful and enigmatic Helga and her sinister
brother Peter. Soon, Roger becomes embroiled in Amsterdam’s seedy
underworld and is unwittingly used as a drug mule on his return
journeys to the UK.
Although the novel’s theme is dark, the story is laced with biting humour.
